A Herd with a History of Staph Infection

Pathogens were positively identified in 57% of samples from cows with high somatic cell counts in a study of a herd with a clinical history of chronic staphylococcal infection.

Following herd testing in the spring, 33 cows with high somatic cell counts greater than 500,000 (average 1,353,000) were RMT tested. Samples were taken from quarters identified as weak positive RMT (n=44) for testing with the Overnighter.

Twenty five of the 44 quarter samples had pathogens identified using the Overnighter. Sixteen were positive for Staphylococcus aureus, four for Streptococcus uberis and four for Streptococcus dysgalactiae, while one sample gave an undifferentiated Streptococcus result.

Staph aureus 16/44 (36%)
Strep uberis 4/44 (9%)
Strep dysgalactiae 4/44 (9%)
Strep 1/44 (2%)

Total 25/44 (57%)
